Starting on the 1st of  September 2025, young people aged 16 to 21 in Wales will be able to travel on buses for just £1 per single journey and £3 for unlimited daily travel. From the 3rd of November 2025, the scheme will be extended to include children aged 5 to 15 too.

'My Travel Pass'

How do I get the £1 fare?

16-21 year olds need a My Travel Pass, and you can apply for yours now on the MyTravelPass website. It’s an easy online form that just asks for a few details and a picture of you.

Applications can take a few weeks to process but may be slightly longer at busy times such as the start of term, so it’s a good idea to apply for yours as soon as possible.

Once you receive your pass, just present it to your driver and you will receive the discounted fare. The pass gives you access to the new discounted fares as well as 30% off weekly, monthly or yearly tickets.

Why Was the Scheme Introduced?

The main aim of the scheme is to make public transport more affordable and accessible for young people. The Welsh Government talked to many young people who said they were spending a lot of money on travel. They said that it made it harder for them to reach places like school or college, work, and meeting friends.

Reducing the cost of travel removes barriers that can limit opportunity, especially for young people in rural or low-income areas. It’s designed to make sure that everyone, no matter where they live or how much money they have, can get where they need to go.

Hopefully, this scheme will encourage young people to use buses more often, which is great for the environment too! If more people travel by bus, it reduces traffic, cuts down on carbon emissions, and helps build long-term habits of using more sustainable travel.

It also supports the future of Wales’ public transport network. Bus services have struggled in recent years with fewer passengers. By bringing more young people on board, this initiative can help boost local services, keep important routes running, and show that buses are a reliable way to get around.
