The Impact of Social Media on Young People
Social media plays a huge part of our lives, but it’s important to be aware of its potential downsides. Let’s talk about how it can affect us and our mental health.
The illusion of perfection
Social media can make it seem like everyone has it all figured out. They’re always posting amazing photos, having fun with their friends, and living the dream.
But remember, that’s often just a carefully curated image. Most people tend to post their highlights, so social media doesn’t show a realistic version of someone’s life. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. However, people on social media don’t tend to show the boring, quiet, and stressful aspects that are part of their day to day.
Don’t compare yourself to others and get caught up in the pressure to be perfect. It’s important to remember that everyone has their own unique journey.
Instead, celebrate your own accomplishments, no matter how small. Also, limit social media usage and spend time on activities that bring you joy instead.
The dark side of social media
The digital world can be a breeding ground for negativity. Cyberbullying, online harassment, and hate speech can have severe consequences for mental health.
Be mindful of your online behaviour. Even if you think something is a joke or harmless, make sure you think twice before posting anything. Ask yourself whether it could be harmful or embarrassing to you or those you know. Remember, once something is posted online, it’s almost impossible to remove it from your digital footprint even if you delete it.
Report any cyberbullying, harassment, doxing, trolling, stalking or abuse you might see online.

The positive power of social media
While social media has its drawbacks, it can also be a powerful tool for positive change. Use it to connect with like-minded individuals, learn new skills, and advocate for causes you care about. It is a great way to connect with people and stay informed, but it’s important to use it wisely.
To use social media to it’s benefit, you could:
- Limit your screen time: Make sure you’re spending time on activities that bring you joy and fulfilment in real life.
- Challenge unrealistic expectations: Remind yourself that people often present their best selves online, and share this with your friends, too.
- Build strong relationships: Focus on deep, meaningful connections with people you know like friends and family.
- Curate your feed: Follow accounts that inspire and motivate you and unfollow those that make you feel jealous, sad, angry or upset.
- Seek support: If you’re struggling with social media, don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
