A drug is something you put in your body that changes how you think, feel, and act.

Some drugs are prescribed by a doctor to people when they’re unwell. There are also legal drugs that people use from day to day, like coffee, tobacco and alcohol.

But when most people talk about drugs, they usually mean illegal or unsafe substances, like cannabis, ecstasy or heroin.

Taking drugs can harm your health, and having them in your possession can be illegal. Drugs can be addictive, and you can become dependent on them.

If you’re worried about drugs, whether you’re using yourself or worried about someone else, you could try speaking to a trusted adult or contacting us on the Meic helpline.
