The service provides professional and independent advocacy to anybody who has mental health issues in ANY hospital setting regardless of whether they are detained, but who are being assessed or treated for a mental disorder. Mental disorder refers to “any impairment of the mind” and is not restricted to narrow definitions or conditions, but also includes Personality disorders, brain injury and autism spectrum disorders. They run the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) programme for people who don’t have the capacity to make decisions for themselves. The referral criteria for this is that the person is “unbefriended” - i.e. they do not have family or friends who can support them. Advocacy Support Cymru are able to provide non-instructed advocacy to their clients.
