How to Become an Ally for Disabled People

We all want to live in a world where we feel included, respected and supported. For people with disabilities, life can sometimes be challenging, but together, we can create positive change!
What does it mean to be an ally?
Being an ally means acting in a way that supports another person and shows solidarity with them. It’s about standing up for what’s right and challenging anything that creates barriers.
How can you become an ally for disabled people?
1. Raise awareness and stay informed
Learn about disability issues by reading articles, watching videos, listening to podcasts and any other ways you can think of. This will increase your understanding. Share what you have learnt with friends and family. The more people know, the better!
2. Speak up for others and challenge negative views
Learn about their rights and listen to what disabled people have to say. Their experiences and views are important. Notice any prejudices you, or others, might have (even if you don’t realise it!) and try to understand things from a different perspective. Challenge negative attitudes and stereotypes when you see them.
3. Celebrate diversity
Get involved in events that raise awareness of disability, like awareness days, festivals, media or cultural events. Support charities and organisations that work to improve the lives of disabled people. We’re all different, and that’s what makes us awesome!
Meic values diversity and believes that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. We believe in standing up for the rights of everyone. We encourage you to be an ally and help create a more inclusive world for everyone.
